Qualcomm may work with TSMC to produce 4-nanometer Snapdragon chips

Previously, Samsung was responsible for the production of the 14-nanometer Snapdragon 820 and the 10-nanometer Snapdragon 835 and Snapdragon 845; the 7-nanometer Snapdragon 855 was produced by TSMC, and then Qualcomm chose Samsung to produce the 7-nanometer Snapdragon 865 and this year’s 5 nanometer Snapdragon 888. .

　　According to media reports, Qualcomm's next-generation 5G chip is temporarily called the Snapdragon 895, and will again be manufactured by Samsung's foundry using the 5nm process. However, in 2022, Qualcomm should work with TSMC to manufacture new chips using TSMC's 4nm process. TSMC’s Chaorman said that the foundry is expected to produce 3nm chips in 2022-Qualcomm may let TSMC produce 4nm Snapdragon chips for it next year.

Compared with the current cutting-edge 5nm process, 3nm chips are expected to increase speed by 11% and reduce power consumption by 27%. The executive believes that TSMC can shorten the cycle because of the use of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. EUV can create extremely thin patterns on the wafer to locate components used on the chip.
