Folding screen mobile phone shipments are expected to reach 18.3 million in 2022, accounting for only 1.2%

 Recently, Counterpoint Research, a market research organization, released a research report on folding screen mobile phones, predicting that the global shipments of foldable smartphones will reach 18.3 million by the end of 2022. From a long-term perspective, Counterpoint is still optimistic about foldable products, but is conservative about the overall shipment growth before the end of 2022.


　　According to the "Foldable Smartphone Shipment Forecast for the First Quarter of 2021" provided by Counterpoint Research, in the foreseeable future, the share of foldable smartphone shipments will remain at a very low single digit. Last year, foldable mobile phones only accounted for a small part of the overall smartphone market, and it is expected to reach only 1.2% of the market by 2022.

　　 Counterpoint Research senior analyst Jene Park pointed out that Samsung has been leading the folding screen product market in terms of design, marketing and shipments, and last year accounted for more than 80% of the market segment. However, this year Samsung faces more competition, including the already released Huawei Mate X2 and Xiaomi Mix Fold, as well as the folding screen products announced or hinted by vivo, OPPO, and TCL.

　　 Jene Park said that before the foldable screen mobile phone market expands, three key things must be completed: the price of flagship products drops; more suppliers participate; and Apple enters the market. He explained that Apple is extremely cautious in terms of cost and component procurement. If the foldable iPhone comes out, it will represent the power of the technology. "We expect this to be achieved by the end of 2022 or 2023."

　　 In addition, Neil Shah, Vice President of Research at Counterpoint, believes that smartphone manufacturers and the Android developer ecosystem need to optimize software and applications for the new dimensions of folding screen products, and reduce risks to quickly expand scale.
