Apple and Google panic! U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approves antitrust bill

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved an antitrust bill targeting tech giants on Thursday, bringing the bill one step closer to consideration by the full Senate.

The bill, co-sponsored by Minnesota Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar and Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, passed the committee 16-6 to protect digital Competition, which would prohibit tech giants from offering an advantage to their own products, services or lines of business on their platforms, would directly affect related businesses of Apple, Google, Amazon and Meta.

The act came about because these tech giants often use their dominant position on the Internet to enhance their competitiveness. Some smaller technology companies are dissatisfied with this. They believe that these giants with large platforms use unfair business practices to maintain their dominant position, which is not conducive to orderly competition in the market and is suspected of being a monopoly.

In response to this bill, the above-mentioned technology giants will naturally not sit still. Apple has warned relevant lawmakers in a letter that once the bill is passed, Apple will have to open the App Store to third parties, which will pose a potential threat to the privacy and security of Apple users. Not long ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai were personally involved in lobbying senators who claimed the bill would harm American innovation and ultimately consumers.
